Doris’s Super Baked Beans
(Capt. Jim’s great Sister-in-Law)
Combine:
1 can VanCamp’s pork and beans
1 can Ranch style beans
1 diced bell pepper
1 diced medium onion
Cook 4 slices bacon until almost crisp, add drippings and crumble bacon into above mixture.
Add:
1 can mushroom stems and pieces
¼ teaspoon oregano
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons white or wine vinegar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard, Dijon, if desired
¼ cup granulated brown sugar
¼ cup Kraft hickory flavor BBQ sauce
heavy dash celery salt
dash thyme
heavy dash lemon pepper
1 teaspoon olive oil
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
If too sweet add a little mustard; if not sweet enough, add a little brown sugar. Combine all ingredients and mix well before baking at 350 degrees until bubbly, about 30 to 35 minutes, removing cover about five minutes before taking out of oven.
Warning: Don’t skip ingredients, whether you like them or not; you won’t get the full effect if you do, and these are the best baked beans in the history of the world. Wine vinegar is best and some people like a little more lemon pepper. Experiment after the first time, but don’t leave anything out.
